Diversity and Inclusion. Gort Community School. Leaving Cert Applied 2011-2012 created two stained glass windows that are now installed at the entrance to our school. The windows were designed by Ben Gabriel an LCA2 student, and celebrate the diversity of people in our school and the inclusive nature of Gort Community School. He choose to use the flags of the 23 nationalities represented here and creatively put them together in a design that includes the globe and the sun. The class worked with Gerry Ruane, a local stained glass artist, and learned the skills associated with this art, such as cutting and grinding the glass, copper foiling, leading, soldering and finally, cementing and polishing. We had an official launch of the stained glass windows. Present was the Minister of State for Training and Skills, Ciaran Cannon TD who unveiled the project. Our Principal Mr. Corry Denis Corry, Deputy Principal Amy Talbot Our Parents Association representatives, members of the Students Council, Board of Management, parents of the students that were involved in the project, teachers and members of the media. Gort Community School – Mental Health Awareness. This year (2012-2013) for our Creative Engagement project, we decided to focus our attention on and create awareness on the importance of looking after our mental health.   The Leaving Certified Applied 2 class co-ordinated the project. It depicts the dark times that we can experience but, when we open our hearts to the support that is out there, our lives can change. The letters MH mean ‘’mental health’’, but look like people. At the bottom of the mosaic are the words ‘HEAD UP HEART OPEN’’…these speak for themselves!!! They designed a mosaic (4ft x 4ft) and, with the guidance of local artist, Gerry Ruane, completed the art piece which is now hung in the assembly area of our school. This LCA2 group also organised workshops on various Mental Health issues for different class groups, such on Depression and Suicide, Bullying, Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
