Creative Marquetry

A marquetry workshop was developed as a hands-on Creative Engagement Process to give students a meaningful introduction to traditional craft skills within Junior Cycle Art. Working with a skilled Galway-based woodwork lecturer and marquetry practitioner, who also contributes as a part-time guest facilitator with Oide, students were guided through each stage of the process from initial design to finished piece.

A capped group of 30 2nd Year Art and Woodwork students took part, ensuring strong individual support and plenty of 1:1 guidance throughout. Students learned how to translate ideas into detailed designs, work with veneers, and carefully cut, assemble, and finish their work to a high standard.

The project created a very positive, focused learning environment where students developed confidence, patience, and pride in their work. It also strengthened links between Art and Woodwork and introduced a completely new skill set. The experience has been very positive overall and will inform future planning in this area.
