This Creative Engagement Project involved 23 fifth-year art students collaborating with a local ceramic artist to design and create individual ceramic sculptures inspired by mythological creatures and folklore. The initiative was developed in response to students’ interest in ceramics and aimed to connect practical studio work with the Today’s World component of the Visual Studies curriculum.
The project was delivered through a series of structured workshops, beginning with an introductory session where students met the artist, learned about her practice, and contributed ideas for the project theme. This was followed by a design phase, hands-on construction using slab-building and modelling techniques, and a final stage focusing on surface treatment with oxides and glazes.
Students played an active role throughout, from researching and developing their own concepts to producing and refining their final pieces. The project fostered creativity, technical skill, and independent thinking, while also providing valuable insight into professional artistic practice. Overall, it was a highly engaging and successful learning experience that promoted collaboration, creativity, and real-world application of artistic skills.
