Harper’s bird illustrations in Marquetry
The Davis College Creative Engagement Project invited Transition Year and 5th-year students to bridge the gap between art and construction through the traditional craft of marquetry. Collaborating with crafts-person John Hewer, students designed a permanent decorative installation for the school building inspired by artist Charley Harper. Known for “minimal realism,” Harper’s bold geometric bird designs provided the perfect blueprint for marquetry a technique of fitting wood veneers into intricate patterns. Students led the process, moving from paper prototypes to final wood selection. This cross-curricular initiative integrated Art & Maths by mapping geometric shapes and scaling designs.Wood Technology involved understanding material properties and sustainable sourcing. History was explored in the heritage of the craft. Students developed technical precision and a deep sense of pride. This project exemplifies how hands-on innovation fosters both creative independence and student well-being. We are so proud of the creativity, technical skill, and teamwork shown by everyone involved.
