Whooper Swan Willow Weave

The Whooper Swan is a winter visitor to our local turlough in such large numbers that it is of national significance. The project ties in with Gaelic studies and our local environment. Weaving the willow connects our students to an ancient Irish tradition using sustainable and natural materials.
The Whooper Swan weave is a sensory based learning experience, working with willow is a unique process bending and manipulating the flexible branches into the desired shape. The hands-on project offered significant therapeutic benefits it is calming, rhythmic process.
Our students worked together to shape the framework of the swan and then went on to weave the whole structure, as well as weaving individual feathers to add to the main sculpture.
The finished Whooper Swan is a beautiful symbol of the student’s creativity and hard work; it is displayed in our G.P area of the school flying majestically from the ceiling.
