This Creative Engagement Project involved students working collaboratively with a local ceramic artist to design and create a large-scale ceramic mural for the school. Together, the students selected a shared theme inspired by Pre-Christian Ireland, drawing on its artistic motifs, design principles, mythology, folklore, native animals, and natural environment. Through a series of workshops, students learned a range of clay-making and ceramic techniques while developing their own individual creative responses to the theme. Each student designed and produced a unique ceramic tile which contributed to the overall mural composition. The students then worked collaboratively to curate and arrange the tiles into one unified artwork. The project fostered creativity, collaboration, communication, and decision-making, as students balanced personal artistic expression with contributing to a shared collective outcome. Throughout the process, the development of the mural was documented through photographs and displayed at the school’s annual art exhibition, allowing the wider school community to engage with and appreciate the project from concept through to production. Once completed, the finished tiles will be assembled into a permanent mural installation within the school. An official unveiling of the artwork is planned for next year, celebrating the students’ creativity, commitment, and achievement. The project provided students with valuable artistic and practical skills, increased confidence in their creative abilities, and a strong sense of pride in contributing to a lasting public artwork within their school community.
